OUM KALTHUM CHOREOGRAPHY WORKSHOP

WHEN: Sunday February 21st 5.00-7.00pm
WHAT: Dancing to a song of Oum Kalthum, the “Star of the East”, the diva of Arab music, is almost sacred. It’s a chance to touch the heart of Egyptian culture, and to learn how to use its special musicality and interpretation of the lyrics. In this workshop we will work on romantic expression through oriental dance combinations and special gestures that embody the music as well as the intention and story of the song.

RAQS BALADI WORKSHOP
WHERE: 440 Studios, 440 Lafayette, bet E 4th St & Astor Pl, 4th floor, Studio 4D, NYC.
WHEN: Friday March 5th 6.30-8.30pm
WHAT: The Egyptian Raqs baladi is known for its hip movements, every day gestures and its earthy fun and juicy vibes. Yael will focus on flowing and dynamic hip work, emphasizing dancing in a relaxed manner and diverse innovative combinations to the song “Sucar Bula”. You will also learn how to project feelings and expression using mime and gestures.

WHO IS YAEL BECKER?
YAEL BECKER is an oriental dancer, choreographer and instructor. She is immersed in the Middle Eastern dance and has been contributing to its field for the past 13 years. Yael was trained in Israel and in Egypt (Elizabeth, Fifi ness, Raqia Hasan, Mahmoud Reda, Yousry Sharif and others). She studied Improvisational and Contemporary Dance (Hakvutza Beyafo, Tel Aviv); Theatre Dance (Naim studio, Tel-Aviv); singing, acting, as well as Meditation and Guided Imagination Technique. She has a B.A. in Psychology and Multidisciplinary Art from the Tel Aviv University. Yael has been Performing and teaching in festivals and stages throughout the world: "Ya Salam" at the Dead Sea, Israel; Indiana University, USA, Saint Martins College, UK among others. Yael has created the following stage shows: "RAKS 2" – Egyptian Oriental Dance Show (Debuted at Inbal Theater, Suzzen Dellal Center, Tel-Aviv, 2006) with Tamar Bar-Gil "Rikdi Tamah" – A Theatrical Oriental Dance Show to live world Music (Debuted at Inbal Theater, Suzzen Dellal Center, Tel-Aviv, 2009). Since moving in NEw York in 2009, Yael recently danced with Kaeshi Chai, PURE-Public Urban Ritual Experiment and The Dalia Carella Dance Collective.
